Local seller has a 185K mile wagon. Asking $2K.

I miss having a wagon, and all wheel drive would be good for winter driving. What breaks on these? Never been a Mercedes person, but entry price seems low enough or is it a complete money pit?

Nice cars indeed, the 4matic has got a rather strange suspension at the front though..

I guess that front spring could be prone to breaking rather more easy than the standard rwd version.

Anyway, W124s are great cars, and I think 505turbeaux used to have one, perhaps he could give some answers.

Non-stock wheels might cause a problem - and on a 4Matic there are many tiny little parts that can break. My W124 ate window motors, a sunroof motor and cable, a turbo (not an issue here), and the cruise control packed up. The trans needed some work as well, but that was all warranty.

That spring is scary looking.

It's a novel solution to the problem of fitting awd to a car designed for rwd indeed.

Was that meant as an answer to GLiddy perhaps? I've owned a few W124s and me dad have as well, I've never had any problems (unless you count worn out tyres as a problem :P)

I don't have any experience with these personally, I'm too young I think. However, most of the older guys I know in the Mercedes works say to stay away from first gen 4matic as they like to leak a lot from crucial places thus rendering awd inoperative. Diffs and transfer case are generally not considered to be rebuildable and are expensive to replace. The whole system is hydraulically operated and of course very complex. But for the most part they stay working if you keep hydraulic oil in them, stay ahead of the leak. When they work, apparently they're wonderful. I've heard of guys going to junkyards and clearing them out of transfer cases and other common parts just so they're ready should something break, just because they love the car so much.

Tell him you'll give him 1,5K though.. 2K seems a bit steep.
